Quinn Emanuel Paid For It In Specifics And Now Pays In Tone

Your remote policy can be narrowed to nothing without anybody revoking it. Above the Law reported this month that Quinn Emanuel still lets its US lawyers work from anywhere in the country, and that the word that changed is indefinitely, now softened to mostly.

In December 2021, the firm went the opposite way from the rest of Biglaw, opening the policy to everyone from first-year associates to partners. John Quinn's line at the time, as that report recounts, was that lawyers should work wherever they do their best work. The 2026 version says the firm is at its best when it is together. Nothing is forbidden. Only the enthusiasm thinned.

What the adverb carries

Mostly is not a rule. It is a disposition, and a disposition cannot be relied on by somebody who moved a family for the job. Tone is not a term, and nobody has standing to object to a mood. Lawyers read indefinitely as a commitment because it was written down next to things that were commitments.

Nobody rescinded anything. Nobody had to. The policy was held up by how the firm felt about it that year, and nothing else.

What was never built

Letting people sit elsewhere is not designing work that can be done elsewhere. The permission was generous. Underneath it, the firm still ran on the doorway: the quick read, the partner caught between meetings, the thing everybody knows and nobody wrote. An arrangement built on tool access and goodwill tells people where things are and never what they may decide.

So when sentiment moved, there was nothing holding the other side. Firms write the location into the policy and leave the decisions in the hallway, which is where people end up going back to find them.
